Yeah but what did they do all they really did was yell at you and tell you what to do. They like disapeared when you had to fight too.

in link to the past he had no helpers, It just so happened that magical words appeared in the air when he was supposed to do something. The helpers are a refinement of that.

in the wind waker, you ended up with many helpers that were actually important to the game. In some parts, Tetra(right name?) the pirate would help u by communicating to you by a stone, but she also was EXTREMELY vital to the main plot. the Red King ship guy thing.... also helped you while out at sea and for the time periods between dungeons when u didn't really know what to do. your helper could also be someone accompanying you into the dungeons such as Markar(right name?), the deku tree sprite thing or that bird girl, both of which were needed to complete the dungeons. The wind waker was just a very well designed game that gave u help in the parts where u needed it and made it easier in parts where u had no helpers. Yet you werent stuck with a constant helper that did nothing importat(ex:Navi).

wasn't it navi who enabled Z targeting? If so then she's the best helper ever. But anyways Midna from TP has one attack. Also she can teleport you around. So she's pretty helpful. Trying not to toss out any spoilers but she's pretty important to the plot.

yeah she did give u Z-targeting, but in later games u didn't need her for that. it felt like putting navi in the game was just an easy way out for the game designers to make it so ppl didn't get stuck in the dungeons as much. It was helpful having her advice, but it just seemed too convinient sometimes (Hmmm....I have a bad feeling, let's go to {next dungeon}.) or (I'm worried about {person} let's go check on her) it didn't take much away from the game but i wish they could've done the level designs better so u wouldn't need navi

well i just beat twilight princess and i must say, it is a truly great game. Maybe not better thatn OoT or LttP but it's right up there with them. When it comes out on the game cube you should get it if you can.
